Sustainable management of industrial areas in Montenegro

Introducing sustainability to the management of industrial areas was the focus of a Horizon 2020 training course organized in Montenegro. The two-and-a-half day course (27-29 June 2011) focused on the environmental impacts of industrial areas on the Mediterranean Sea and on the tools and measures necessary to mitigate these.

The participants were Montenegrin professionals working on coastal zone management or in industrial areas, sourced mainly from local and national environmental regulatory bodies, industry and academia.

COP-5 Rotterdam Convention strengthens protection against hazardous chemicals

The fifth meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP-5) to the Rotterdam Convention on the Prior Informed Consent Procedure for Certain Hazardous Chemicals and Pesticides in International Trade agreed by consensus to add three pesticides (alachlor, aldicarb and endosulfan) to Annex III of the Convention. The agreement was reached on Friday, 24 June 2011, at the conclusion of a week-long meeting held in Geneva.

Cleaner Production Centers on the southern shore of the Mediterranean will share a platform of information and communication

On 21st and 22nd of June The Regional Activity Centre for Cleaner Production (RAC/CP) of UNEP/MAP participated in Tunis (Tunisia) in the working meeting of Knowledge Management System (KMS) for the Arab Region. This platform is a working virtual space developed under the framework collaboration of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO).

Improving WEEE management in the Mediterranean Region

From 20th to 22nd of June was held in Brussels (Belgium) a course within the framework of Horizon 2020 capacity building programme. The course was focused in the management of waste and from electronic and electrical equipment (WEEE).

In the event the participants were trained in order to increase their understanding of the complex and multidimensional problems of WEEE and to improve their skills to allow them for appropriate decisions making regarding WEEE management options.

Learning to measure our carbon and water footprints

On 20th and 21st of June 2011 it was held in Athens (Greece) a regional workshop within the framework of the Horizon 2020 capacity building programme. The event was focused in measuring carbon and water footprints.

As climate change and water scarcity pressures increase in the region, efforts to improve reporting skills on mitigation and adaptation measures are becoming all the more relevant. For that reason, the course showcased the existing Mediterranean frameworks and strategies and built the case for reducing carbon and water footprints, through measurements and indicators.
