EU to ban cadmium in jewellery, brazing sticks and all plastics

Cadmium in jewellery, plastics and brazing sticks will be banned in the EU from December 2011. High levels of the harmful substance cadmium have been found in some jewellery articles, especially in imported imitation jewellery. Consumers including children risked being exposed to cadmium through skin contact or through licking.

The 3rd Meeting of GDE on the application of the Ecosystem Approach was held in Albania

The 2nd and 3rd of June was held in Durres (Albania) the third Government-designated Expert (GDE) meeting on the Application of the Ecosystem Approach by Mediterranean Action Plan (MAP).

The purpose of the GDE meeting was to review and discuss the progress achieved with a particular focus on the initial integrated assessment report, draft ecological, operational objectives and indicators and the proposed timetable for further implementing the ecosystem approach roadmap.

Subnationals governments are key actors in the shift towards a change of sustainable consumption and production patterns

The Network of Regional Governments for Sustainable Development (nrg4SD) has adopted an advocacy paper that outlines the role of subnational governments in Sustainable Consumption and Production in general and, more specifically the potential of their contribution to the Programme areas of the UN 10 Year Framework Programme.

MEDPOL held its National Focal Points Meeting in Rhodes

From 25th to 27th of May, MEDPOL (the Coordinated Research Program and Pollution Monitoring of the Mediterranean) held its National Focal Points Meeting in Rhodes (Greece).

The participants of the meeting were the National Focal Points of the Program, international experts, representatives of environmental institutions in the Mediterranean region and the MEDPOL team. On the other hand, the MEDU Programme Officer and the CP/RAC Director also participated in the meeting.

Methodology for the selection of the key industrial sectors: the first steps of BAT4MED project


The first steps of the BAT4MED project foresee the elaboration of a Methodology in order to identify the key industrial sectors of the involved Mediterranean Partner Countries.

In particular the methodology, predisposed during the current WP2, aims to analyze several industrial sectors in order to select the ones with the highest Environmental Benefit Potential. The methodology could be considered a very important deliverable because the selected sectors will be in deep analysed during all following work packages.
