Compilation study on the current situation in the MAP countries of the adoption and development of the principles and strategies that give priority to pollution prevention at source, and of cleaner production in industry.

The study focuses on the agents operating of each country and on the plans and programmes which have been drawn up, and also on the tools and activities which have been developed.

The study presents the interaction between industry and sustainable development in the Mediterranean Region, analysing the current situation, the legal framework, action programmes and the existing players and instruments. Furthermore, this information is complemented with the perspective, policies and strategies of the non-community countries of the region.

The document served as a working document at the regional meeting on the state and trends of industry and sustainable development which took place in Barcelona in June 2001, and includes the conclusions and proposals which came out of that meeting.

The study introduces biotechnology, its principles, evolution and the main biotechnology areas. It also presents some of the industrial applications of this discipline, as a tool for environmental management and pollution prevention.

Furthermore, it also highlights the existing biotech resources in the Mediterranean Region, and other areas, and presents various practical cases of the application of biotechnology to reduce pollution in different industrial sectors.

Plan for the reduction of the hazardous wastes carried out in the framework of a regional programme financed by the Global Environmental Facility (GEF) for the implementation of a first stage of the Strategic Action Programme (SAP).
 
This Plan presents a first inventory on hazardous wastes with data from the biennium 2000-2001 and on this basis it elaborates proposals at regional and national scale.

It also presents several practical success stories and examples to make it more comprehensible.

This Guideline of regional scope facilitates to the different countries the implantation of the Strategic Action Programme from national level, contributing to the sustainable development and mitigating pollution of land based source in the Mediterranean Region.

This guideline for the application of best available techniques (BATs) and best environmental practices (BEPs) in industrial sources of BOD, nutrients and suspended solids tries to show the environmental impacts of this type of industries.

Also, it presents approaches that the industry and the governments can put in practice to reduce and to diminish these impacts by means of the application of pollution prevention alternatives.

Guideline that presents the basic characteristics of the agricultural systems of the countries of The Mediterranean Action Plan and the main associated environmental problems to the fertilizer use in agriculture.

The guide identifies the main pollution prevention opportunities and shows an extensive set of proposals of Good environmental practices applicable to the Region.
