The objective of this study, which is based upon tanning processes for sheep skins and cow hides, is to offer industry and/or experts in the field a straightforward, easy- to-use document, which sets out the main options to prevent pollution and optimise production processes.  

The study also offers an overview of the sector for each of the countries of The Mediterranean Action Plan.

The study includes a description of the sector, its processes and the different technical options in the olive oil production process. Furthermore, it details the main environmental characteristics peculiar to the sector, as well as the alternatives for exploiting the by-products of the oil presses which vary according to local conditions.

The study is a compilation of information on the state of the sector in the Mediterranean region and on the environmental impact of the activity of food preservation. It also presents the main options open for pollution prevention as applied to the industrial groups of this sector.

The study covers production sub-sectors both of plant origin (fruit and vegetable) and animal origin (fish and meat). Dairy products, the abattoir sector and cured meat products have not been included.

The principal objective of this manual is to inform enterprises working in the metal machining sector of the opportunities available to them for integrated pollution prevention. In this way they can foresee, and minimize, the environmental impact of their activity, while at the same time they can be encouraged to look into new ways of preventing pollution in their factories.

The study “Pollution Prevention in the Structural Ceramics Sector” provides an overview of the economic situation of the construction industry and the structural ceramics industry in different countries in the Mediterranean region, describes the different production processes involved in manufacturing structural ceramics, and indicates the technologies applied and resulting environmental aspects and impacts.

The Programme of Good Housekeeping Practices for Hotels is an awareness-raising programme that aims to improve the habits of hotel staff and suppliers, along with those of their clients.

With this objective in mind, two basic instruments have been designed: a training plan for hotel employees and a communication plan intended for hotel staff, along with hotel guests, suppliers and any other interested party.

The main objective of this guideline is to inform companies that have offices and/or an administrative area at their headquarters about the opportunities to apply good housekeeping practices to minimize the environmental impact of their activity and, at the same time, to encourage them to look for new opportunities to prevent pollution in
their operations.

The study presents the most important good practices in administrative procedures and
groups them in seven categories that refer to the main vectors involved: purchasing criteria, efficiency in the use of water, paper and energy, suitable maintenance, waste
management and cleaning.

This review of Best Available Techniques (BATs) and Best Environmental Practices (BEPs) for hazardous waste treatment in the Mediterranean Region aims to provide a reference document to be used by the Mediterranean countries to improve their hazardous waste treatment practices.

The types of hazardous waste treatments considered in this review have been classified into four main categories: treatment, thermal treatment, use of hazardous waste in industrial processes and landfill.
