BAT4MED meeting in Pisa (Italy)

The 2nd Project Management Board Meeting of the BAT4MED project took place from 27th to 29th of June 2011 in Pisa (Italy). The main issues of the agenda were to identify the key industrial sectors where the project will focus, assess the work done in the first 6 months and define next steps until the end of the year. The first study visit included in the project was carried out on Monday 27th in relevant industries from the region in order to learn about their processes and management.

After reviewing and discussing the results of the national analysis realized in Tunisia, Morocco and Egypt, the Partners agreed to focus the project in two sectors: food (especially in lactic industry) and textile. The decision is based on the detection of high opportunities for environmental improving in these sectors and in also in the fact that both sectors have common needs in the three Mediterranean countries.

The Partners also decided the next steps to follow in the near future. They agreed to realize different audits in industries of the key sectors identified that will be carried out by VITO and SSSUP. These audits will be used also as a capacity building activity for the expert group of the project.

During the meeting the Regional Activity Center for Cleaner Production (CP/RAC) of UNEP / MAP had a relevant role regarding the work done for the dissemination of the project and also as organizer of the national workshops that will take place in October and November in each of the participant countries (Tunisia, Morocco and Egypt).

The BAT4MED project, “Boosting Best Available Techniques in the Mediterranean Partner Countries”, aims to analyse the potential impact of the introduction of the Integrated Pollution Prevention and Control (IPPC) concept in the Mediterranean Partner Countries and, more specifically, if this can contribute to minimize the negative impacts associated with polluting industries from key industrial sectors. To this end, a total of 8 partners (IAT, VITO, SSSUP, CP/RAC, EEAA, CITET, CMPP and CEDARE) are brought together into a coordination action that will enhance networking of high level research.
