A H2020 regional training strengthens capacities on Sustainable Food Production

2 Diciembre 2013 | Actualizado: 10 Diciembre 2013

Within the EC funded H2020 CB/MEP, CP/RAC organized from 13th to 15th November in Barcelona a regional training on Sustainable Food Production with 40 participants from 10 southern Mediterranean countries.

The first day was spent on visiting two innovative food production sites in Catalonia, such as La Fageda, a social cooperative that products premium farm yogurts within a natural park; and Maset Plana, a family producer of organic olive oil that reuses 100% of all industrial wastes and monitor its environmental footprint to decrease it as much as possible.

The second day was focused on discussing the European Directive on Industrial Emissions with an overview of good practices on environmental management (e.g. MEDTEST program) to reduce waste, energy and water use, in particular in the beverages and dairy sectors in the Mediterranean region.

The third day included technical sessions on the reduction of organic matters (BOD) in industrial waste waters, within the Mediterranean program on marine pollution (MEDPOL). Each country presented its national plans on the topic, highlighting the opportunities, barriers and needs to implement sound environmental policies in their own food industry.

Full information, participant list and presentation will be available soon in the Horizon 2020 website.
