The CP/RAC becomes the Regional Activity Center for Sustainable Consumption and Production (SCP/RAC)

12th December 2013 | Updated: 10th April 2014

The last Conference of the Contracting Parties to the Convention for the Protection of the Marine Environment and the Coastal Region of the Mediterranean that was held in Istanbul from 3rd to 6th December decided to update the name of the Regional Activity Center for Cleaner Production according to the mandate that the countries assigned to the center in 2009 to promote Sustainable Consumption and Production (SCP). Accordingly, the center has now been renamed as Regional Activity Center for Sustainable Consumption and Production.

At the Rio+20 Summit, Heads of State and Government reaffirmed that promoting sustainable consumption and production patterns was an overarching objective of, and essential requirement for, sustainable development.

Sustainable Consumption and Production (hereinafter SCP) involves a radical transformation in the way we produce and consume goods and services to satisfy our needs with the objective of progressively decoupling human development from the planet’s degradation and advancing towards sustainable and social inclusive economies.

In order to do so, the shift to SCP requires the combined implementation of diverse measures including technical, regulatory, market, fiscal and economic instruments supporting:

  • The implementation of resource efficiency and cleaner production (RECP) techniques and the adoption of alternatives to toxic chemicals in the production of goods and services
  • The integration of life cycle thinking in the design of products and services (Life Cycle Assessment, Cradle to Cradle)
  • The creation of disruptive business models contributing to green economies
  • The mainstreaming of sustainable products and services in the market (green/sustainable public procurement, eco-labeling)
  • The introduction of fiscal and economic instruments promoting SCP (green financing, environmental accounts, etc)
  • The empowerment of civil society as main driver in the shift to SCP
