Used lub oils management in Algeria

Participants in the meeting on used lub oils in Algeria

The CP / RAC participated last day April 25, 2012 at a meeting on the management of used lubricating oils in Algeria, in a GEF project that foresees the implementation of a comprehensive system of management of this toxic waste.


The meeting was held at the Ministry of Physical Planning and Environment (MATET) in Algiers with the participation of 36 experts representing stakeholders (ministries, local authorities, private sector and NGOs). The meeting was opened by Mr. Nezar Farid, Director General of MATET, Ms.Tatiana Hema  UNEP / MAP /MEDPOL representative and Mr.Frederic Gallo, UNEP / MAP / CPRAC.


During the meeting there was a long discussion on the current system of waste oilsin Algeria, and agreed to the establishment of an intersectoral working group for the continuation of project activities, including completing the existing legal framework, a  technical and economical study to help the authorities to take the necessary decisions, the establishment of a national census of oil generators, the development of a pilot project for the collection of oils, and various capacity building activities.
