SCP/RAC held its 10th Ordinary National Focal Points Meeting

On 1-3 June 2015, SCP/RAC held its 10th Ordinary National Focal Points Meeting in Madrid (Spain). The meeting came out with the recommendation of national representatives to submit the 3rd draft of the SCP Action Plan to the next meeting of UNEP/Mediterranean Action Plan (UNEP/MAP) Focal Points and with comments and suggestions to the 1st draft of the Roadmap for the implementation of the SCP Action Plan.

In total, the meeting brought together thirty-four participants including: government representatives of 16 Mediterranean countries (Algeria, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Croatia, Egypt, France, Greece, Israel, Italy, Lebanon, Malta, Monaco, Montenegro, Slovenia, Spain, Tunisia, Turkey) and Jordan and Palestine, representatives of UNEP/MAP Coordinating Unit, of Priority Actions Programme – Regional Activity Centre (PAP/RAC), of Specially Protected Areas – RAC (SPA/RAC) as well as Mediterranean Experts on SCP and part of SCP/RAC team.  

On day 1, sessions served to inform on the progress on the development process of the SCP Action Plan and to introduce the Roadmap for its implementation. As part of this development process, Philipe Jochaud (SCP/RAC Team Leader) informed on the changes and improvements made to the 3rd draft of the Action Plan. After short discussions, and still with the possibility to add minor changes, national representatives finally recommended submitting it for the validation of UNEP/MAP National Focal Points at next ordinary meeting to be held next 13-15 October 2015.     

Sessions of day 2 were specially focused on presenting and discussing the first complete draft of the Roadmap. Participants warmly welcomed the structure and the contents of the document and proposed several modifications that will be incorporated in the 2nd draft of the document. This second draft will be sent for their review by next 19th June. Next, Enrique de Villamore (SCP/RAC Director) and Roger Garcia (SCP/RAC deputy director) informed respectively on the activities developed by SCP/RAC during the biennium 2014-2015 and its funding resources.

Last day, SCP/RAC Director and Team Leaders presented the proposal of actions for 2016-2017 and the actions related to new projects through which SCP/RAC can support Mediterranean countries in their involvement in regional and global programmes of cooperation for SCP. It was agreed that the first draft of the Work Plan 2016-2017 will be presented by the end of June. Finally, a conclusions document containing comments and requests of National Focal Points on the SCP Action Plan and its Roadmap, and on the next Work Plan was adopted.

The meeting was conceived and organized according to sustainability criteria in different areas.
